Hand-made arts and crafts are alive and well in the town of Orvieto and its surroundings. There are many workshops in which antique techniques are used, creating unique artifacts that preserve a precious sense of human craftsmanship. Among such activities is ceramics, which started in Orvieto in the year '300, thanks to the "vascellari", a corporation of the Comune. Agricultural motifs and etruscan-looking animals abound. Among the objects there are "panate": pitchers with a wide brim modelled after those made 5 centuries ago in the town's ovens.
There are also many design and domestic objects in terracotta and wrought-iron.Another product is "Irish" lace, made in Orvieto.
The town is also known for woodworking with a modern flair, and for goldsmithing particularly the etruscan technique of granulation. Finally, there is leather-working, an almost-vanished craft that is still alive here.
